Carlisle Airport was originally opened as RAF Crosby-on-Eden base in 1941 where it was originally used as a base for training Hawker Hurricane pilots. After WWII the RAF station became redundant, Carlisle City Council purchased the site and in 1961 it became licensed for training purposes and civilian domestic flights, but flights ceased in 1994.
Over the years it has changed hands multiple times, in 2019 domestic flights restarted but stopped early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bought in 2024 by its current owners, Carlisle Lake District Airport is currently only open for military and general aviation.
