Carlisle Airport Selected for New HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Base

We're pleased to announce that Carlisle Lake District Airport has been chosen as one of two new seasonal bases set to enhance the UK’s search and rescue capabilities from 2026, bringing fresh investment and skilled aviation jobs to the region.

The new facility forms part of the UK’s Second Generation Search and Rescue Aviation (UKSAR2G) programme. It will operate annually from April through September, supporting HM Coastguard during the busiest period for tourism and outdoor activity across the country.

The base will run daily between 9am and 9pm, with one aircraft maintained at 15-minute readiness to respond quickly to emergencies. Coverage will extend across Cumbria, southern Scotland, and surrounding northern areas.

Work is already underway at the programme’s second seasonal base in Oban, which replaced the originally proposed Fort William site. Meanwhile, Carlisle Lake District Airport remains on schedule to open its new search and rescue facility in April 2026.

Richard Jenkinson, Airport Director at Carlisle Lake District Airport, welcomed the announcement, highlighting the significance of the development for both regional safety and economic growth.

He said the airport was “honoured” to be selected as a key location for the next generation of Coastguard operations, adding that the new base would strengthen emergency response services while reinforcing Carlisle’s role as an emerging aviation hub in the North.

He also noted that the airport looks forward to working alongside HM Coastguard and Bristow Helicopters to ensure the base is fully operational when needed.
